EXTRA: WENGER ON HAZARD AND SPENDING

Alexis Sanchez celebrates
Read extra quotes from Arsène Wenger's press conference ahead of the Community Shield. For more headlines, visit our Digest page.
on Chelsea…
It’s our next game and the first trophy at stake. We will want to win the game of course.
on Eden Hazard…He can decide the games and you put the top players in this kind of calibre when they can decide the games with something special. Hazard is in this category, now to reach the other two or three that are dominating world football at the moment I think it demands consistency which he is still to do.
on comparing Hazard with Cristiano Ronaldo…
It is all about opinions. You have to compare the numbers. I must say players like Messi and Ronaldo still score 50 goals and that is exceptional.
on much difference between Alexis and Hazard…
I don't like all these comparisons. Everybody always thinks these player is the best which I can understand but Sanchez did for the first year in the Premier League is absolutely exceptional and hopefully he will not only repeat it but grow again.
on whether Hazard was ever a target…
Yes.
on how close the deal was…
A few million!
on advice for young coaches…
Longevity does not depend only on the coach, also on his environment. I believe it is important, but we live now when the trend in our society is that we only want [what is] new. But I still believe that longevity and the cohesion, the history, the values has to be carried by someone and it is better that it is carried through generations by someone who knows what he wants and has the authority to do it.
on being called a ‘big-spending club’ and pressure that comes with…
We have more desire to do well than the pressure. We want to do well and we enjoy to play together. I think what you want is not to listen too much to what people say,
because sometimes in the same week I get two different reproaches: one I don’t spend enough and one too much. I believe if you want to create success, which we want desperately, is to focus on inside and try to do as well as we can, believe in the football we want to play, play it as well as we can and let other people talk.
on not spending more than developed…
I believe that one day if you make real statistics of the players we have developed here and compare them to the other clubs, you will be surprised.
on having a good record at Wembley…
I think Chelsea have beaten us at Chelsea 2-0 last year, where we felt that we gave the game away a little bit. At home, we played 0-0, so it’s a third opportunity for us to beat them. We have a good opportunity to show that we have improved. It’s on neutral ground, where they’ve had success and we’ve had success, so it will be very interesting.

Cesc Fabregas says his love for Arsenal will never change

Source:ESPN UK Edition
Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas says his affection for Arsenal will never change, despite the prospect of a hostile reception at Wembley this weekend.
Chelsea, Fabregas' current team, will face Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday. And Fabregas, who spent eight years with Arsene Wenger before moving to Barcelona in 2011, has promised his fond memories of being a Gunner won't be soured by anything that takes place in London over the weekend.
"Whatever it is, it is. The love I have for that club will never change whatever happens and what is the most important is what I have with me are the memories," said Fabregas. "The rest doesn't matter. I have great memories, love and respect for the club. You will never hear anything bad from me about them.
"Of course, it is not the most important game but we want to win and compete. It is a big game, a London derby at Wembley in front of all the fans -- it's a nice competition to play in.
"Even if it is a preseason game you still want to win. We are not worried that they might be fresher than us -- they started 10 days before us -- but we are competitors, we will want to win and it will probably be a great game."
Cesc Fabregas says it will be difficult for Chelsea to retain their Premier League title. this season.

Manchester United and City have invested in some big-name reinforcements this summer to strengthen their squads for the upcoming Premier League season. And Fabregas, who moved to Chelsea for a reported €33 million in June of 2014, believes their increased investment this summer, coupled with last year's spend, will make the league even more difficult for Chelsea to repeat as champions in 2015-16.
"[Manchester] United already spent last year, Arsenal last year too. We spend, [Manchester] City maybe less, then now they spend again," the 28-year-old said.
"They all want to compete and it will be for sure very difficult to retain the Premier League. There are four or five teams who can win it. We will see what happens but we know we will have to fight again."
Chelsea were runaway Premier League winners last campaign, and Fabregas discussed the obstacles they'll face if they are to lift the crown for a second consecutive season.
"People will say United, City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea -- there will always be divided opinions. What we have to do is to maintain the levels of last season because all the teams will be better and that means we will better so we can compete against them to do well.
"It has been important for us to get started again. We know we are one of the teams who started later than others, most of the teams started earlier but I think the method we use for training is the right one to try and compete all season.
"We have a good squad. Let's see if a few players come in but we are happy with what we have and we will try and compete until the end."

FALSE ALARM: Benzema Move

Fellow Frenchman Benzema has been linked with a £40m bid, however reports that he was on a private jet on the way to London have proved to be false - he is in Shanghai with the rest of the Real Madrid squad on their pre-season tour.

Laurent Koscielny: Arsenal defender scores brilliant rabona in training and then challenges Cristiano Ronaldo to perform the same

It has often been said that Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny could play anywhere on the pitch, and here he is flicking in a delightful rabona goal in training during the Gunners' Member's Day at the Emirates yesterday.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema this summer, but they may not need him after all with a centre-back that can finish like this (watch video below).
Koscileny then challenged the world's best player, Cristiano Ronaldo to perform the same trick. Ronaldo had showed his own showboating prowess in Shanghai during Real Madrid training earlier in the day.
Uploading the video to his Instagram Koscielny wrote: "Can you do this Cristiano Ronaldo?"

The French defender performed a couple of kick-ups before chipping the ball into the top corner with a sublime rabona, much to the surprise of Jack Wilshere who was standing in the goal.
Koscielny, 29, joined Arsenal from Lorient for £10m back in 2009, and has become an integral part of the Gunners side.

OFFICIAL: Arsenal have confirmedthat goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has joined AS Roma on loan for the 2015/16 season

The Polish goalkeeper was not likely to feature for the Gunners following the signing of Petr ÄŒech and has been allowed to leave for Serie A, where he will spend one year with the Italian giants.

Szczesny, 25, has played 181 Arsenal appearances, including 29 last season, and will battle with Morgan De Sanctis for playing time in Rome. The veteran goalkeeper was number one for Roma last season but with Szczesny arriving is unlikely to keep his place.
Last season Roma finished second in Serie A and qualified for the Champions League, so Szczesny is joining up with a very competitive side. Hopefully he proves his worth and returns to Arsenal to compete with Petr Čech a year from now. Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has said he has faith in the goalkeeper to have a future at Arsenal so this is his opportunity to prove his worth and develop further by getting minutes on the pitch.
David Ospina is set to remain at Arsenal as ÄŒech’s backup and the club also has highly-rated Emiliano Martinez available. One of those goalkeepers may leave before the window closes but it seems a smart decision to loan Szczesny out at this point.
We wish Wojciech all the best and hope to see him back in goal at Emirates Stadium in the future!*
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny lifts the FA Cup after the FA Cup Final between Aston Villa and Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on May 30, 2015 in London, England.
*Maybe not for Roma, though. We could face them in the Champions League and he would be eligible to feature.

Wojciech Szczesny targets trophies after joining Roma on loan from Arsenal

Wojciech Szczesny has left Arsenal to join Italian side Roma on a season-long loan
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has joined Serie A title hopefuls Roma on a season-long loan deal.
The 25-year-old Poland international was limited to 17 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Gunners last season, with David Ospina gradually wresting control of the gloves at the Emirates Stadium, and the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea has increased competition further.
Szczesny told asroma.it: 'I've come here to win matches and trophies with Roma and I think the team are strong enough to do that. I think there's great potential here.

'I already know the faces and the names of my new team-mates and I'm hoping to get settled here quickly.'
Szczesny, who lost his place to Colombia stopper Ospina shortly after shipping two goals in a 2-0 defeat at Southampton on New Year's Day, also hit the headlines for reportedly smoking in the showers after that game.
Manager Arsene Wenger insists the former Legia Warsaw keeper has a future in north London.
'I personally rate him highly - you do not take a boy and put him in the first team at the age of 20,' he said last week, before the loan was confirmed.
'He already has huge experience. I don't want that experience at such a young age to be wasted.'

White House rejects ‘We the People’ petition for Edward Snowden pardon

The White House has issued a scathing response to a petition asking that National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden be granted amnesty.
The petition, titled simply “Pardon Edward Snowden,” garnered 167,954 signatures since its publication to “We the People” on June 9, 2013.
“Edward Snowden is a national hero and should be immediately issued a full, free and absolute pardon for any crimes he has committed or may have committed related to blowing the whistle on secret NSA surveillance programs,” the original petition reads.
In her response, Lisa Monaco, Obama’s adviser on homeland security and counterterrorism, said the country needs to make important decisions about the balance between security and civil liberties.
“Instead of constructively addressing these issues, Mr. Snowden’s dangerous decision to steal and disclose classified information had severe consequences for the security of our country and the people who work day in and day out to protect it,” she wrote.
Monaco said that if Snowden felt his actions were consistent with civil disobedience, he should have engaged in “a constructive act of protest, and — importantly — accept[ed] the consequences of his actions.”

In May 2013, Snowden leaked classified information about the NSA’s global and domestic surveillance operations to journalist Glenn Greenwald and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras.
The following month, the U.S. Department of Justice charged Snowden with violating the 1917 Espionage Act and stealing government property. A few days later, the former NSA contractor traveled to Russia, where he has been living at an undisclosed location while applying for asylum in 21 other countries.
Monaco argued Snowden should come back to the U.S. to be judged by a jury of his peers, rather than hiding behind “the cover of an authoritarian regime.”
“Right now, he’s running away from the consequences of his actions,” she said.
Last March, Snowden’s Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, said that his client would be willing to return to the U.S. if he were guaranteed a fair trial, according to Russian government-owned news agency TASS.
“Edward Snowden is ready to return to the U.S.,” he said, “but on the condition that he will be given guarantees on receiving a fair and impartial trial.”

Trump takes a bit of a haircut on NYC penthouse

Image result for donald trumpDonald Trump has sold his penthouse at Trump Park Avenue for $21 million, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The price tag loses a little of its luster when you take into account the fact that Trump had initially listed it two years ago at $35 million. He ultimately dropped the price 40 percent to make the deal.
He bought the whole building in 2001 for $115 million, converting what was then the Hotel Delmonico into 100-plus luxury condos and, obviously, keeping some of the space for himself.

The listing agent, Michelle Griffith of Trump International Realty, confirmed to Yahoo Homes that the unit was Trump's. It never had another owner, though Trump never lived in it; instead, he rented it out, Griffith told Yahoo Homes.
Photos: Trump's Park Avenue penthouseHe had simultaneously listed it for sale and for rent, asking $100,000 a month. Before this sale was finalized, he rejected a prospective renter's offer of $80,000 a month,Griffith told the Journal: "In his mind, it was a strong market and it was a good time to get a deal done." The monthly payment on a $17 million mortgage (assuming a $4 million down payment) would be about $80,000 at today's interest rates.
The penthouse has 5 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms in 6,200 square feet. The building, which dates to 1929, offers a concierge, daily maid and laundry service, and of course a round-the-clock doorman.
Ivanka Trump, his daughter and an executive vice president of the Trump Organization, lives in the building. She told the Journal that the sale was unrelated to fundraising for Donald Trump's presidential hopes.

Earth Will Only Have 12 Hours To Prepare For Massive Solar Storm

Trains will be disrupted, power will go out, satellite signals will go wonky - that’s what we have to look forward to when the sun next has a melt down, and we’re unlikely to get more than 12 hours warning.
In a new government document, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills has laid out its Space Weather Preparedness Strategy, outlining the risks of unsettled space weather as well as what it plans to do about them.
The document explains that the worst case scenario is a ‘coronal mass ejection’ - huge eruptions on the sun which cause parts of its corona to detach. The corona is the pearly glow around the sun that you can only usually see during a total solar eclipse, made up of plasma and rarefied gases.
The worst case scenario is based on the Carrington event of 1859, which caused solar-flare related x-rays and radiation storms. In 2015, a similar event could cause the national grid to fail, satellite operations to shut down, increased radiation on flights and upset to electronic systems.
The report suggests that there are three things the country needs to do to prepare for such an event: improve alerts and warnings, update power and communication infrastructure with failsafe backups and have a plan in place to deal with the effects should they come to pass.
As for you: the advice from the government is to prepare yourself for a solar event just as you would for any other natural hazards like floods and storms.

An American Dentist Killed Zimbabwe’s Famous Lion

Cecil the lion, a famous black-maned resident of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, died at the hands of an American dentist, conservationists claim.
They say Walter Palmer paid $50,000 to hunt and kill Cecil with a bow and arrow. The incident occurred around July 6, with a professional hunting outfit reportedly luring Cecil outside the boundaries of the protected reserve using a dead animal as bait.
“Mr. Palmer shot Cecil with a bow and arrow but this shot didn't kill him,” Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said in a statement. “They tracked him down and found him 40 hours later when they shot him with a gun. Cecil, who was known all over the world would have earned millions of dollars just from sightseeing. Walter Palmer apparently paid $50,000 for the kill."

It wasn’t the first kill for Palmer, who has multiple photos posted on the website Trophy Hunt America showing the Minnesota resident posing with dead lions, rhinos, water buffalo, warthogs, and other animals.
The Telegraph is reporting from two independent sources that Palmer was indeed the hunter listed on the permit documents, and a spokesperson for Palmer told the news outlet that Palmer believes he is the one responsible for the lion’s death.
“As far as I understand, Walter believes that he might have shot that lion that has been referred to as Cecil,” the spokesperson said. “What he’ll tell you is that he had the proper legal permits and he had hired several professional guides, so he’s not denying that he may be the person who shot this lion. He is a big-game hunter; he hunts the world over.”
Theo Bronkhorst, the professional hunter who led Palmer to Cecil, has reportedly been suspended indefinitely from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association for the way the hunt was carried out.
“ZPHGA reiterates it will not tolerate any illegal hunting or any unethical practices by any of its members and their staff,” the organization said in a statement. “We will await the completion of the current investigation by Zimbabwe Parks Wildlife Management Authority before commenting any further.”
Park rangers and regular visitors knew the 13-year-old lion as a tourist attraction, easily approached by safari guide jeeps for photo opportunities. Cecil had a propensity for lounging in the middle of roads, said Bryan Orford, a former park guide and a longtime visitor to Hwange. Hunting such an easy target only made the killing of Cecil even more wrong, he said.
“I used to drive down the railway line road following Cecil and had to wait for him to get off the road,” Orford told TakePart last week. “This walking in front of the vehicle would go on for ages. Other times he would lie in the road, and you had to drive off the road to go around him.”
The death of Cecil not only means one less endangered African lion in the world but also could mean the demise of a whole line of cubs sired by the leader of the Hwange pride.
“The saddest part of all is that now that Cecil is dead, the next lion in the hierarchy  Jericho will most likely kill all Cecil's cubs so that he can insert his own bloodline into the females,” Rodriques said. “This is standard procedure for lions.”

Taliban Leader Mullah Omar Has Died, Afghan Officials Say

Mullah Omar, whose Taliban regime in Afghanistan sheltered Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda for years before the September 11th attacks, has died, Afghan officials said today.
Image result for Mullah OmarThe Afghan president's and prime minister's offices offered no specifics as to how or when Omar died.
The announcement was made as Kabul and the Taliban engage in a second round of peace talks this month.
Last week, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani thanked the reclusive Omar for endorsing the peace talks, which began earlier this month in Pakistan, where they were supervised by U.S. and Chineserepresentatives.
U.S. officials could not immediately confirm Omar's death. The State Department is currently offering a $10 million reward for information leading to him.
