Wounded female warrior accepts ESPY in the spirit of Pat Tillman

Danielle Green learned how to be tough while growing up on the mean streets of Chicago. That outlook served her well during her intercollegiate basketball career at Notre Dame in the late ‘90s where she fought to win and racked up enough points to become the Fighting Irish’s sixteenth leading scorer of all time.
But it wasn’t until Green enlisted in the Army that she was made to discover just how tough she really is. She deployed to Iraq in January of 2004 with the 571st Military Police Company.  Shortly into that tour she was hit by shrapnel from an RPG that exploded next to her while she was pulling sentry duty on a rooftop in Baghdad.
“That pain was like nothing else,” Green said. “It was so painful I wanted to die.”
Green lost her left arm halfway between the wrist and elbow. After extensive surgeries and rehab, she had to face the reality that her military career was over. “I gave all I could give,” she said. “I realized I wanted to serve in a different way.”

She attended graduate school and studied to be a school counselor, and at some point between getting her degree and her job search a friend suggested she focus on helping service members with the issues that surround the move back to civilian life. “That’s my purpose,” she said. “That’s my mission.”
Green now works for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a readjustment therapist at the Veterans Center in South Bend, Indiana. “It’s how I can continue serving my fellow veterans,” she said.
Last week Green was honored with the 2015 Pat Tillman Award for Service at ESPN’s Espy Awards held in Los Angeles.
Marie Tillman, president and co-founder of the Pat Tillman Foundation and Pat Tillman’s widow, said Green was selected for the award because of her resilience and personal efforts that have made her “a voice and advocate for this generation of veterans.”
“Not all of us are Pat Tillman,” Green said during her acceptance remarks in front of a packed house of sports greats and celebrities broadcast to a national TV audience. “But we can all find ways to serve our community. We can all find ways to support the people around us. We can all find a purpose on this earth larger than ourselves.”

Real Madrid confirm Casillas to Porto deal

The Spanish goalkeeper ends a 25 year period at the Santiago Bernabeu in order to join the Portuguese side
Real Madrid have confirmed that long-serving captain Iker Casillas will leave the club for Porto.

The goalkeeper had been linked to a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu for some time, with Madrid looking to sign Kiko Casilla from Espanyol and pursuing Manchester United's David de Gea.

The World Cup winning shot stopper had reportedly already agreed personal terms with the Portuguese side, but failure to break from his contract at the capital club was holding the deal back.

Now, though, Los Blancos have revealed that a deal has been struck that will see him bring an end to a glorious career in La Liga.

"Real Madrid and FC Porto have agreed the transfer of Iker Casillas to the Portuguese club," a statement on their official website read.

Casillas spent 25 years attached to Madrid, during which time he won five league titles. two Copas del Rey and three Champions League trophies.

Oliseh Not Capable Of Handling Super Eagles –Westerholf

FORMER Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Clemens Westerhof, has said that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) willbe making a big mistake by handing untested Sunday Oliseh the job of the team’s Chief Coach.

Oliseh, 40, was handed his Super Eagles debut by Westerhof in 1993 and the Dutchman has said he still lacks the requisite experience to handle such a difficult team.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Ajax midfielder has only ever managed a third division Belgian side Vervietois as well as worked as TV pundit and a member of the Fifa Technical Study Group for the 2014 World Cup.

“No, no, no, no that cannot be, he can’t be Super Eagles coach. Oliseh cannot do it, no, he can’t,” Westerhof was animated as he told Complete Sports.

“If the Nigeria Football Federation is bringing Oliseh to handle the Super Eagles, then that is too bad because it is not right. It is not proper, he is not the right man for the job.”

The 75-year-old, who led the Super Eagles to their second African title in 1994, then reeled off the work experience he and recently sacked Stephen Keshi earned before being handed the Nigeria top job.

“Before I took over the Super Eagles in 1989, I was head coach of Feyenoord and we were champions after many years. I coached other top teams in the first division, Vitesse, MVV and came back to Vitesse again.

“Keshi was a top quality player in Belgium with Lokeren, Anderlecht, RC Strasbourg in France, Sacramento Scorpions and all that. He coached several other teams including Togo and Mali.

“Where did Oliseh coach? What is his coaching experience? Do you want to start learning how to coach with the senior national team,” he asked.

Westerhof also detailed the kind of problems likely to be faced by the new coach in the face of player egos.

“Coaching amateur teams is not enough to get experience of handling top teams like the Super Eagles.

“Players cannot respect him, you know, he cannot command their respect and influence as they loved and respected me, as they also respected and loved Keshi,” he said.

“What the players of the Super Eagles need is a coach who the players will love to respect, who has positive influence on the players and I don’t think Oliseh has these qualities,” Westerhof said.

“Under Oliseh Super Eagles will do well

Enugu – Football stakeholders in Enugu have applauded the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on the appointment of Sunday Oliseh as the new Super Eagles coach.
They said in Enugu on Saturday that the appointment would end the coaching problem in the Super Eagles.
The Enugu State Director of Sports, John Eli, said that Oliseh would be a good and sound coach considering his pedigree in football.
“As a one-time Super Eagles captain and having undergone coaching courses with good qualification, the appointment is a good one from the NFF.
“I believe that under him, the Super Eagles will do well as he is going to use his experience and knowledge as a player and coach to assemble good players for the country,’’ he said.
He commended the choice of indigenous coaches which he said would encourage the younger generation of coaches to work harder.
In his contribution, the Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Enugu State, Norbert Okolie, said that the former and the new Super Eagles coaches were the same in terms of achievements as players.
“The NFF may have appointed Oliseh because he holds a better certificate than those who contested for the post with him and the previous coach.
“As they have given him the job, let them also give him a free hand and the enabling environment to do the job with his experience and ability.
“I hope he will take the Super Eagles to greater height in football and qualify us for the 2017 African Cup of Nations,” he said.
Another stakeholder, Ebere Amaraizu, congratulated Oliseh on the appointment but quickly added that coaching was not really the problem of Nigeria football but grooming grassroots players.
“We need to look beyond hiring and firing coaches because the problem of Nigerian football is our inability to groom players from the grassroots to take us to where we want to be.
“Football in Nigeria is not growing because we have neglected grassroots football; where are our games villages and primary schools competitions?
“I started playing football competitions from primary school which was organised by the government, likewise the notable past footballers in the country.
“We need to discover new Austin Okochas, Tijani Babangidas, Uche Okafors, Stephen Keshis, Christian Chukwus and others right from the primary schools,” Amaraizu, the Team Manager of Crime Bursters FC of Enugu, said.
